You may already know this, but I’m a huge fan of detoxes and absolutely love exploring new ways to cleanse my body, mind and spirit… Now my skin!

If you’re looking for a natural way to improve your circulation, remove toxins from your skin, and make it glow, then dry brushing might be the self-care ritual you’re missing.

Dry brushing is a detox aid that has been used for centuries to stimulate the lymphatic system; along with exfoliating the skin and promoting your overall well-being as well as feeling absolutely dreamy! Dry brushing just a few minutes a day will have you looking like a new woman.

In this post, we’ll dive into everything you need to know about dry brushing, what it is, how it benefits your body, and the best techniques to maximize lymphatic drainage.

Whether you’re new to it, or a seasoned brusher you’ll find all the tips you need and more.

What is Dry Brushing?

Dry brushing is when you use a firm, dry bristled brush on your skin, brushing in a specific pattern.

You can find dry brushing’s roots in Ayurvedic practices, which is an ancient Indian system of medicine that focuses on the holistic/natural side of health and healing. It’s known as Garshana, a practice that traditionally was performed using raw silk loves or natural bristle brushes that would stimulate circulation, detoxify the body, and enhance the flow of energy in the body.

Dry brushing was also part of ancient Egyptian, Japanese, Native American, Russian, Ancient Greek, and Scandinavian skincare rituals.

Hence the name ‘Dry Brushing’, it’s typically done before you go in the shower, as its benefits are more effective when the skin is dry… And we’ll get onto why in the next section!

Benefits of Dry Brushing

1. Lymphatic Drainage

One of the main benefits of dry brushing is to stimulate and drain your lymphatic system, which is your body’s detoxing system. It helps flush out toxins and drain out the extra fluid you might be storing in your body.

2. Exfoliation

Dry brushing removes your dead skin cells without moisture getting in the way. If you brush wet or moist skin, the bristles won’t be as effective in exfoliating. By doing it before you hop in the shower, you can easily rinse away the loosened dead cells, which will leave your skin feeling as smooth as butter.

3. Improved Circulation

Optimal blood flow makes your skin glowy and plump. It works by stimulating circulation through gentle but firm strokes on your skin. The increased circulation delivers more oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells, promoting the regeneration of your skin and boosting its vitality.

The boost in your circulation will also contribute to reduced puffiness leaving you looking snatched and radiant!

4. Reduced Appearance of Cellulite

Dry brushing can help the appearance of cellulite by stimulating your circulation and with its lymphatic drainage properties. The brushing motion helps break down toxins stored in your fat cells, temporarily plumps your skin, and improves its elasticity too.

5. Energy Boost

Many dry brushers experience an energy boost after dry brushing, which is similar to a light massage.

How to Dry Brush for Lymphatic Drainage

1. Choose the Right Brush

It might seem like an obvious choice… Just a dry brush right? But you’d be wrong. There are different types of brushes and you’d do well to research them to make sure you get the right one.

You could get natural bristles, these are plant-based or animal-based such as:

  • Boar bristles
  • Agave plant fiber
  • Cactus bristle
  • Sisal bristle

I wouldn’t recommend synthetic bristles like Nylon, as they can be very harsh on the skin and may cause irritation.

There are also soft bristles if your skin is particularly sensitive, like goat hair bristles or extra soft synthetic fibers

2. Start at the Feet & Move Upward

Always make sure you brush toward the heart to support lymphatic flow.

3. Use Light, Gentle Strokes

Avoid pressing too hard, especially on sensitive areas as the brushes can irritate your skin if they’re used with too much force.

4. Focus on Key Lymphatic Areas

The neck, armpits, abdomen, and groin are the key areas for the best lymphatic drainage.

5. Shower Afterward

Rinse off the dead skin and toxins, once you’ve given your body a good brush!

6. Moisturize

Be sure to hydrate with a natural oil or lotion after showering, to make your skin soft and supple!

Dry Brushing Techniques & Best Practices

1. Long, Upward Strokes

This is the most common dry brushing technique and is used on the limbs to encourage blood flow to the heart and lymphatic drainage.

2. Circular Motions

This is the best technique for joints to stimulate circulation in the areas with more complex structures in the muscle.

3. Gentle Strokes on the Abdomen and Chest

Use a bit of a softer touch with circular motions to avoid irritating your skin while still promoting lymphatic movement.

4. Always Brush Towards the Heart

Brushing towards the heart aligns with the natural flow of your blood and the lymphatic system, which will aid in detoxification.

Dry Brushing for Radiant Skin & Wellness

Creating a dry brushing routine will have you experiencing so many different benefits from soft, glowy skin, to a drained lymphatic system that will have you looking refreshed and snatched.
